Pros and Cons of Salt Water Pools

Are Salt Water Pools A Viable Option?

We’ve all experienced the feeling of stepping out of the pool with bloodshot red eyes, irritated skin, and an odor of chlorine that would make even the most seasoned of swimming professionals run for the shower!  Well what if there was another option?  Salt water pools!  For years, pool owners have been pretty much forced to go with the chlorine-filled pools because it was the only viable option.  Now salt water pools are a force to be reckoned with and are making a splash all across America!

The Pros And Cons of Salt Water

Pros

  1. Much easier on the eyes, skin, and nose!  As previously mentioned, that feeling of stepping out of the chlorinated pool and running to the shower is no longer inevitable.  While there is still chlorine in salt water systems, the levels are far lower and therefore cause much less irritation.
  2. Less maintenance for your pool!  There is still work to be done, but the salt cells produce chlorine as needed.  It’s still a good rule of thumb to monitor the chlorine levels fairly regularly to ensure your system is working properly.
  3. No more toxic chemicals that come with chlorinated pools!  Storing all of those hazardous jugs of chlorine are a thing of the past so you won’t have to suffer through that foul odor!  On top of that, saltwater pools are more environmentally friendly!
  4. The cost savings over time make salt water pools an extremely viable option!  With the money saved by not purchasing chlorine, the initial investment would pay for itself in a few years.

Cons

  1. Higher initial investment.  While over time, switching from chlorine to salt water would pay for itself, the initial investment could exceed $5,000 and discourage many people.
  2. Damage to your accessories is also a factor.  Reports have shown that liners, lighting, fixtures, masonry, and even heaters can depreciate much faster with a salt water pool.  However, this only applies to outdated or older equipment.
  3. Calcium build up due to high pH levels can potentially stick to the surface of the pool and become a pain to remove.
